Introduction
Medical science has witnessed profound technological advancements in recent decades, significantly impacting how we practice, diagnose, and treat. These developments have also challenged our understanding of humanity and raised serious ethical, philosophical, theological, and legal dilemmas.
As medicine evolves at an ever-accelerating pace and the world becomes increasingly interconnected, we find ourselves in an information age where the public relies on online sources and multimedia to make decisions about right and wrong. It is essential for Muslim leaders, healthcare professionals, and stakeholder bodies to be equipped to navigate contemporary bioethics effectively. They must help others make sense of these important questions through a sound understanding of scripture, informed expert guidance, and impactful communication tailored to Muslim public, health professionals, and organizations.
In our 3rd International Conference on Fiqh of Medicine, Al Balagh Academy will present and explore critical areas of Islamic Bioethics and Medical Fiqh. Topics will include withholding and withdrawing life-sustaining treatments, brain death, advanced directives, ethics and spirituality for dying patients, and the challenges faced by Muslims in end-of-life (EoL) care. The event will also include discussions on bereavement counseling, death certification, and ensuring a good Muslim death.
The conference will feature insightful presentations, panel discussions, and opportunities for networking among medical practitioners, Islamic scholars, and other academics. The agenda will highlight contemporary issues in Islamic Bioethics, the future of medical Fiqh, and its practical implications for the global Muslim community.

The conference will begin with an introduction and welcome followed by discussions on withholding and withdrawing life-sustaining treatments, ethical and fiqh perspectives on brain death, advanced directives, and assisted dying. The program will also explore spirituality, bereavement counseling, and ensuring a good Muslim death. Panel discussions will address contemporary issues and future developments in Islamic Bioethics, and the day will conclude with a closing speech and dua.
- Introduction and Welcome: The day begins with opening remarks, followed by Al Balagh key stats and accomplishments
- Withholding & Withdrawing Life-Sustaining Treatment (LST): This session delves into the complexities of end-of-life care, exploring the Fatawa related to life-saving treatment, the current Fiqh perspectives, and the challenges faced by Muslims in making ethical decisions. The segment concludes with Panel Discussion 1, providing a platform for diverse viewpoints.
- Brain Death and Advanced Directives: Ethical dilemmas surrounding assisted dying, controversies in diagnosing death, and future perspectives on advanced directives for Muslims will be examined. Panel Discussion 2 will offer further insights and practical guidance on these critical topics.
- Ethics and Spirituality for Dying Patients: This session focuses on ensuring a good Muslim death, addressing challenges in death certification, and providing bereavement counseling tailored to Muslim needs. Panel Discussion 3 will bring together experts to explore holistic approaches to supporting dying patients and their families.
- Closing Speech and Dua: The conference concludes with a reflective speech and heartfelt prayers, summarizing key takeaways and inspiring action in the field of Islamic Bioethics.
The event will host thought leaders and international Muslim experts on Islamic Fiqh and Bioethics. Muslim scholars, academics, health bodies, NHS representatives, medical professionals, and the public will meet on one platform to present a blend of ethical, practical, and theological perspectives. This will allow space for questions, discussions, and proposed solutions.
